NAM ID:A neo-vernacular Andalusian Earthship: complete energy self-sufficiency and integrated water management, adapted to the Mediterranean climate.
This is the studio’s first 100% self-sufficient home, disconnected from all utility grids. It’s a neo-vernacular Andalusian take on the #Earthship, set among centuries-old holm oaks and olive groves.
The stonework was one of the biggest challenges, and key to integrating the house into the landscape. Local master masons and stone from Benaoján made this result possible.
This Earthship, designed by Farfán Estudio, aims for energy self-sufficiency and integrated water management.
The home is linked to a working farm. It meets the requirements of Andalusia’s new Land Act and is specifically adapted to the climate of its Mediterranean setting (high temperatures, intense solar radiation, seasonal water scarcity and prevailing winds).
Its goal is to achieve passive thermal comfort, energy self-sufficiency, integrated water management and local resource production, reducing environmental impact and dependence on external infrastructure to zero.
The Challenge
To design a fully self-sufficient home disconnected from all utility grids, able to adapt passively to the climate of Alhama de Granada and blend into a natural setting of centuries-old holm oaks and olive groves.
The Solution
We developed a bioclimatic home inspired by the Earthship concept and reinterpreted through Andalusian neo-vernacular architecture. The house combines passive thermal regulation, renewable energy production and circular water management, using 100% ecological materials. The stonework of local master masons and the use of Benaoján stone help it blend into the landscape, resulting in a contemporary home deeply rooted in its surroundings.
