This nearly zero-energy home needs no energy at all for heating or cooling, thanks to the sea breezes, cross ventilation and a convective courtyard. An experimental geothermal cooling system was developed for it, drawing on the coolness of the basement, which is in direct contact with the ground. In terms of materials, the standout feature is the roof structure, built with timber salvaged from the 2021 Sierra Bermeja wildfire. It is the first time this timber has been used in construction in Spain: after the fire, the burnt trunks were destined to be turned into pellets for burning. The process involved Astilleros Nereo, M\u00e1laga’s traditional shipyard, which transformed the burnt trunks into structural beams, supporting the city’s traditional wooden boatbuilding craft.
